Nickel Alloy Properties

Alloy C-276 is one of the most corrosion-resistant nickel-based alloys used in modern process industries. Its nickel-molybdenum-chromium base, strengthened by a tungsten addition, enables high performance in a wide range of aggressive chemical environments, particularly oxidizing and reducing acids. In the solution-annealed condition, it provides exceptional resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, while its high molybdenum and chromium contents improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. For this reason, Alloy C-276 is widely selected for chemical processing, petrochemical service, acid production, flue gas desulfurization systems and chloride-containing process environments.

Description

Alloy C-276 can retain a high level of corrosion resistance after welding thanks to its low carbon and low silicon contents, and it also offers good weldability and formability. It can be welded by common methods such as TIG/GTAW, MIG/GMAW, SMAW and plasma welding, and in many applications it can be used without post-weld heat treatment. During cold forming it may work-harden rapidly, so intermediate annealing may be required after severe deformation; hot forming is generally performed in the 950–1,200 °C range. C-276 should be regarded primarily as a corrosion-resistant alloy for aggressive chemical and chloride-bearing environments rather than as a dedicated high-temperature alloy.
