Monel 400 / Alloy 400 is a nickel-copper based, single-phase, solid-solution alloy. Unlike stainless steel, it is not an iron-based material but is classified as a nickel alloy. Its key characteristic is its high corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments. Corrosion rates are particularly low in rapidly flowing brackish water or seawater. The alloy also provides excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in fresh water. Monel 400 is a solid-solution alloy that can be strengthened by cold working.

Monel 400 / Alloy 400 is a nickel-copper based, single-phase, solid-solution nickel alloy. It stands out with high resistance in various corrosive environments, good weldability and the ability to retain toughness over a wide temperature range. Monel 400 / Alloy 400 cannot be hardened by heat treatment; its strength can be increased by cold working. While it performs well in flowing seawater and in many fresh or industrial water environments, the risk of crevice and pitting corrosion should be considered in stagnant seawater or poorly aerated conditions. Although it can be used up to approximately 538 °C in oxidizing atmospheres, the design temperatures permitted by the relevant standards should be checked separately for pressure vessel and special process applications.
