Nickel Alloy Properties

HASTELLOY C-22 / Alloy C-22 is a tungsten-bearing nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy designed for high corrosion resistance. Alloy C-22 provides strong general corrosion resistance in demanding process environments where oxidizing and reducing chemicals may be present together. Its high chromium content supports performance in oxidizing media, while molybdenum and tungsten improve resistance in chloride-containing and reducing environments. Due to its high resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, it is preferred in chemical processing, petrochemical plants, seawater service, waste treatment, flue gas desulfurization and mixed industrial chemical processes.

In commercial use, Alloy C-22 is most commonly seen in tank, reactor and scrubber parts fabricated from plate/sheet, seamless or welded pipe-tube systems, and valve, pump, flange and fitting components machined from bar. The main reason for selecting this alloy is that more standard materials such as Alloy 625 or 316L may be insufficient in mixed acids, chloride-containing solutions, combined oxidizing and reducing process media, and equipment exposed to a high risk of localized corrosion.

Description

HASTELLOY C-22 / Alloy C-22 is a highly ductile Ni-Cr-Mo-W alloy that can be readily fabricated from plate, pipe and bar into process equipment. It can be welded by GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG and SMAW processes when suitable procedures and filler metals are used. Its low carbon and silicon contents help resist grain-boundary precipitation in the heat-affected zone, making it a reliable choice for chemical process equipment. The alloy is suitable for cold forming; however, because it work-hardens faster than stainless steels, intermediate annealing may be required after heavy deformation. When this behavior is properly managed, C-22 offers a safer and longer-lasting fabrication option compared with C-276, Alloy 625 and standard stainless steels in selected aggressive environments.
