Nitronic 50 / XM-19 is an austenitic stainless steel grade that combines high strength with strong corrosion resistance. In the annealed condition, it provides higher mechanical strength than conventional 300-series stainless steels and largely retains its properties at both low and elevated temperatures. It also stands out for maintaining low magnetic permeability even after cold working, together with good toughness and weldability.

Nitronic 50 / XM-19 varies significantly in its mechanical properties depending on the delivery condition; annealed, hot-rolled, and strain-hardened materials do not provide the same performance. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but its strength can be markedly increased by cold working. Because of its high work-hardening tendency, machining requires low cutting speeds, rigid tool holding, and continuous cutting. ER209 filler metal is preferred in welding to obtain strength and corrosion resistance close to those of the base material. Nitronic 50 / XM-19, however, remains susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in hot chloride environments despite its high general corrosion resistance.
