1.4313 is a soft martensitic stainless steel that combines high mechanical strength with good impact toughness. In the tempered condition, it exhibits good toughness and can be used at temperatures ranging from approximately -60°C to 300°C. The material offers moderate corrosion resistance and machinability and can be readily polished. Although it can be welded using arc welding processes, suitable preheating and post-weld heat treatment conditions may be required.

1.4313's final performance is governed mainly by quenching and tempering. The controlled martensitic structure produced by heat treatment allows strength, hardness and toughness to be balanced for the intended service conditions. QT780 provides higher ductility and impact toughness, whereas QT900 provides higher yield strength and hardness. Welding can create a hard, untempered heat-affected zone; therefore, preheating according to section thickness, controlled heat input and post-weld tempering are important. For this reason, an order should not specify only grade "1.4313"; the required QT condition, section size, hardness and impact-toughness acceptance criteria must also be stated clearly.
