Steel Properties

1.4462 / Duplex 2205 is a duplex stainless steel grade with a balanced austenitic-ferritic structure. It stands out for its high mechanical strength, resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and good weldability. Its yield strength is approximately twice that of conventional austenitic stainless steels, while its two-phase structure requires greater care during machining.

Description

1.4462 / Duplex 2205 has good weldability and can be joined using TIG, MIG/MAG, shielded metal arc welding and submerged arc welding processes. Preheating is generally not applied before welding, nor is stress-relief treatment applied after welding; however, heat input and interpass temperature must be controlled to preserve the phase balance. It can be cold formed, but its high strength requires greater forming force and allowance for springback than 304L and 316L. Its machinability is lower than that of austenitic stainless steels; rigid machinery, sharp tools, continuous feed and adequate cooling should be used. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment; solution annealing followed by rapid cooling is applied to restore structural balance and corrosion resistance. Due to its ferrite-containing structure, it exhibits magnetic properties.
