AISI 314, an austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel, provides good resistance to oxidation and scaling at elevated temperatures. It can offer scaling resistance in air up to approximately 1150 °C; however, the permissible service temperature must be determined according to the atmosphere, mechanical load, thermal cycling and exposure time. Its weldability and formability are generally good; the risk of structural embrittlement during prolonged exposure within the 600–950 °C range should be considered.

AISI 314 has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion and lower thermal conductivity than carbon steels. Therefore, expansion allowances should be provided in large furnace components, and distortion should be controlled in welded structures. This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment and gains hardness only through cold working. Owing to its austenitic structure, it is essentially non-magnetic in the solution-annealed condition and generally does not require post-weld heat treatment.

AISI 310S is the closest alternative to AISI 314 in terms of high-temperature and oxidation resistance.
AISI 309S is a more economical alternative that provides sufficient heat resistance at lower service temperatures.
AISI 316Ti may be considered for applications where the service temperature is lower and corrosion resistance becomes the priority.
